CD Information
"The German-language popular song can be traced back about 500 years. On the whole, the sources contain more texts of popular songs than melodies. There were already a large numbers of songbooks aimed at serving the needs of well-to-do burghers and city-dwellers in the second half of the fifteenth century. Thanks to Gutenberg, popular song collections began to appear in the sixteenth century. The stock of orally shared songs attracted the interest of such major composers as Hans Leo Hassler, Heinrich Isaac, Ludwig Senfl and others. These composers brought the popular song into the courtly environment with their part-song settings and lifted the German tenorlied to its place of high esteem.
Over the centuries, new generations grew up and stood in admiration of the powerful, nearly unlimited canon of German popular song, and experienced their heartwarming texts and melodies like a revelation and who, finally, also wanted to play and perform them themselves because they discovered in them a timeless validity and beauty. Bettina Pahn and Joachim Held are members of this group. Bettina in particular had close contact with popular song from her earliest. Singing these songs was an integral part of her childhood and youth. And the lute has always accompanied these songs, an instrument that was capable of polyphony and whose expressive potential made it especially well suited to expressing the essence of the popular song.
